To breathe is essential to life
Learn a simple exercise to breathe for optimum health.
Anyone who practices yoga or does some form of meditation at a health spa knows the importance of correct breathing.
The importance of breathing and oxygen is obvious. We can live for over a month without food, days without water but only minutes without oxygen.
So why do we rush about our lives, breathing shallowly into our chests and taking little notice of this vital aspect of our health.
Shallow chest breathing results in a wide range of health problems including;
Low energy and fatigue
Dizziness and feelings of unreality
Poor vision
Anxiety and panic attacks
Chest pains and palpitations
Heartburn and gas
Breathing Exercise
The good news is that poor breathing habits can be improved with this simple exercise practiced a few times a day;
Take 10 breaths 3 times a day in the following ratio;
Inhale for a count of 1
Hold for a count of 4
Exhale for a count of 2
Use this ratio to increase the count as you improve eg. 5:20:10
Tips
To ensure you are doing the breathing exercise correctly, lie on your back or sit straight up in your chair. Rest an open hand on your abdomen and concentrate on your breath. Upon inhaling your abdomen should fill up like a balloon.
Use yawning as a prompt, it is your body saying “Please breathe”. So whenever you have low energy or are feeling fatigued, before reaching for a coffee, try taking a drink of water and doing some breathing exercises as described above.
The car is a great place to practice, especially the times when peak hour traffic is causing you stress. Chill out with some breathing exercises. Just don’t over do it and stop immediately if you become light headed.
